Gulag or GULAG was the government agency that administered one of several Soviet penal labor camp systems. The Gulag system is infamous as the place where many millions died from inhuman work conditions and hunger. The camps housed a variety of criminals, but are well known for holding ordinary citizens who were not guilty of any crime, along with political prisoners.
