NASA

National Aeronautics and Space Administration - Eisenhower authorized NASA the following year after the Soviet Union launched the first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, the startled USA went into high gear to catch up in this new Cold War space competition. Eisenhower was alarmed that the USA was falling behind in science and technology, persuaded Congress to give additional money for college scholarships and university research.
